Citroen unveiled a concept car at the Paris Motor Show that revives its iconic 2CV brand as an electric vehicle, targeting launch by 2028 at a price expected below £15,000. The retro-styled small city runabout preserves the original's distinctive high-arched wheel wells, tall curved roof and eye-like headlights, which remain instantly recognizable from the 1948 model that became a cult classic over its 40-year production run.
Citroen chief executive Xavier Chardon called the vehicle "a modern, ingenious and refreshing response to the mobility challenges of tomorrow." The company is betting heritage will help sell modern electric cars to skeptical consumers as European manufacturers face intensifying competition from Chinese EV makers.
This reflects an accelerating trend. Renault has already revived the Renault 5 E-Tech, Renault 4 and Twingo as electric vehicles. Volkswagen markets the ID-Buzz minivan as a throwback to its classic T2 Transporter, and Ford is developing an EV expected to carry the Fiesta name. BMW's Mini range and Fiat's 500 have long employed retro styling.
Rachel Burgess, senior editor of Autocar magazine, says the strategy works because "an older audience might remember the originals and feel warmly towards them, and a younger audience might find an appeal in the retro aspect."
David Leggett, automotive editor at Global Data, frames the challenge plainly. "Many in the industry believe the big automotive players in Europe face a very serious existential threat from aggressive Chinese manufacturers," he says. Dr Paul Nieuwenhuis, automotive researcher, agrees that heritage offers European carmakers an advantage Chinese rivals cannot match. "Linking European designs back to their history while using the latest powertrain technology is something the Chinese cannot do. The Chinese can establish new design trends, but there is limited history there," he says.
Leggett cautions that Citroen will need more than nostalgia to succeed. The car must function as "a credible modern electric car in terms of functionality and features, with widespread appeal," beyond its visual connection to the original 2CV.
