Israeli strikes in Gaza killed at least eight people, including a four-year-old child, according to hospital officials, despite a ceasefire that began in October last year.

In Gaza City, a missile attack near Cairo School in the Al-Rimal neighbourhood killed three people, including the child, hospital officials said. In Khan Younis to the south, the Hamas-run interior ministry said a drone strike on the Al-Mawasi area killed five police officers as they performed routine duties. The officers ranged in age from 23 to 53.

The Israeli military said it carried out two attacks on what it described as military operatives but provided no evidence or additional information.

Ali Oweis, whose son and grandchild were killed in the Gaza City strike, told AFP news agency: "My son and his child were martyred. They were sitting in their tent, bothering no one, and nothing else was happening in the area when suddenly, a missile struck them, and they were martyred. There is no ceasefire; the war is ongoing."

The interior ministry called the Khan Younis attack a "horrific massacre." Video footage showed body bags at Nasser hospital in the city.

Since the October ceasefire came into force, Israeli air strikes have continued almost daily. Gaza's health ministry says 1,580 people have been killed during this period, a figure the UN considers reliable. Since the war began in October 2023, the ministry reports 74,594 deaths in Gaza. A Trump administration peace plan for the territory has stalled.
