Jesus de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for Spanish second-division side Tenerife, died in hospital on Tuesday following a collision during a match against FC Andorra on Monday.

De Miguel suffered head and chest injuries when goalkeeper Jesus Owono's knee collided with him during stoppage time in a 2-2 draw. His condition was described as stable but serious on Monday, but deteriorated by Tuesday morning. Spanish media reported he suffered cardiac arrest in the ambulance and was resuscitated by paramedics before reaching hospital.

Owono received a straight red card and the referee abandoned the match. Police in Spain have opened an investigation for possible involuntary manslaughter, as Spanish law triggers a judicial inquiry for any non-natural death.

De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year deal and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances. He is survived by his daughter, Carla, born in 2025.

Tenerife's president Felipe Minambres said the squad would need professional assistance to process the trauma. The Spanish football federation postponed Tuesday's Copa del Rey fixtures in response. Real Madrid and Arsenal held minutes of silence. Forward Lionel Messi wrote on social media: "There are no words. My condolences and lots of strength to all his family and friends."
