Trump conceded that Democrats performed well in the midterm elections after taking control of both the Senate and House, according to statements made on his Truth Social platform and in interviews with The New York Times and Fox News.
Trump told Fox News that "the Democrats did a good job. they fought hard" and said he was "absolutely willing to accept" the election results. He told The New York Times he looked "forward to working with" the Democrats and expected they would "probably work something out."
However, Trump predicted conflict ahead. He said Democrats would send "insane" legislation to his desk that he would veto, and predicted that after "a couple of months of vetoes, they'll call and they'll say, 'how do we get this stuff done?' And we'll work together."
Trump blamed part of the Republican losses on the Iran conflict and its effect on US fuel prices. He told Fox News that while "people agree with what I'm doing on Iran," they were unwilling to accept higher gas prices in the short term.
Trump criticized individual Republicans, including Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who lost his race. Trump wrote on Truth Social that Abbott "wouldn't have lost" if he "hadn't become a RINO in the last six months," using the acronym for "Republican in Name Only." Trump added that Republicans "would have won IN A LANDSLIDE" if he had been on the ballot.
Trump also attacked Fox News in multiple Truth Social posts, saying the outlet spent "too much time" covering Democrats and criticizing an interview the network conducted with former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, whom Trump called "the Worst Mayor."
